- Wearing an epic 16C suit courtesy of the brilliant Truly Carmichael and featuring the amazing replica trim she sells through www.trulyhats.com, I was inspired to play something renaissance. Francesco Canova is always my first choice for 16C composers, and I went with my favorite piece of his: Fantasia 35. A Fantasia (“fan-tah-SEE-ah” despite Disney’s misapprehension) is an improvisatory piece characterized by thematic repetition that is named “a fantasy” because the typically-strict rules of medieval and early-modern music are ignored. They’re delightfully whimsical and I deeply enjoy playing them, as a rule, and Canova’s are consistently my favorites.
