During the Civil War a home guard unit made up of eight men arrived at the Brooks home , her husband and oldest son John was shot to death. Not long after the murders, Jenny and one of her sons shot dead the leader of the home guard Dr. Andrew Kaiser. Jenny cut his head off and boiled it in her yard until the flesh was gone.
