Welcome to another episode of @bigjonshawaiianadventures, on today's episode we're on the hunt for monster waves that you only get in the winter months here in North Shore #oahu, #hawaii, these massive waves usually hit their peak around the end of December and beginning of January, generated by ferocious storms off the coast of Alaska in the winter, around this time between #waimea bay and #sunsetbeach waves can average between around 15-20ft in height or higher attracting some of the greatest surfing legends both local and from around the world, these individuals who take on these massive waves eat, sleep and breathe surfing, certainly not recommended for inexperienced surfers. The top 3 most famous beaches here in North Shore, O'ahu where these gigantic waves form are Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach where the famous Banzai Pipeline is located, and Sunset Beach, all 3 beaches are relatively close to each other with Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) being in the middle. Although there can be several professional surfing competitions that take place here in the winter time, the two most iconic ones are The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational held at Waimea Bay and the Billabong Pipeline Masters held at the Banzai Pipeline at Ehukai Beach this year between January 29 through February 10, 2023, The Eddie is only held when there are record breaking waves, the waves have to reach a minimum required height of 30ft for this competition to happen, in this case the surfers have to use a method called tow surfing where they maneuver in position by hitching a ride behind a jet ski, The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational was just held on January 22, 2023 with waves reaching up to 40-50ft in height.
