Video Description
The Bay of Hersonissos (Greek: Κόλπος Χερσονήσου), stretching from Cape Sarandari (Greek: Ακρωτήρι του Σαραντάρη) in the west to the port of Hersonissos (Greek: Χερσόνησος) in the east, provides ideal conditions for relaxing on the beach. This terrain protects beachgoers from the frequent northwesterly winds in the region, while the well-developed surroundings and calm sea attract tourists like a magnet. There are several small beaches here, which most often have one common name taken from the name of the cape – Sarandari beach (Greek: Παραλία Σαραντάρη). At the base of the cape lies the most wind-sheltered section of the beach. It's a sandy beach with a dozen or so sunbeds and umbrellas, accessible via steps carved into the limestone cliffs. It's adjacent to the amphitheater (Greek: αμφιθέατρο) located above, so it can be noisy, especially during events taking place there. Continuing along the road, you'll find a rocky section of the beach, nestled against the cliff, exceptionally well-protected from prying eyes. Naturists favor this section—a rarity on beaches in northern Crete. Men predominate among the beachgoers, as it's unofficially LGBT+-friendly (officially, there are no such beaches on the island). The beach is devoid of sunbeds and umbrellas, and the seabed is rocky, so water shoes are a must. Be careful when descending from the cliff to the beach—there are no steps; you must follow a well-trodden path. Just beyond the nudist beach lies the most popular and largest of the beaches mentioned so far. Short concrete steps lead down to it, so descending shouldn't pose any problems. The water here is shallow and calm, the beach is sandy and sheltered from the wind, and the seabed is mostly comfortable. It's an ideal choice for families with children. You can rent sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach, and there are toilets and changing rooms, as well as a small beach bar. The beach ends at the bend in the road above, beyond which you'll find the equally beautiful Giofyri Beach (Greek: Παραλία Γιοφύρι), with coarse sand, often called "rice." The water here is deeper than in Sarandari, and the seabed is rocky. It's also more crowded than the previous beaches.
