Video Description
In a groundbreaking development, researchers from the University of Southampton in the U.K have successfully stored the entire human genome on a “5D memory crystal.” This experimental technology can store data permanently using something called a femtosecond laser writing process, with the potential to last billions of years. Led by Professor Peter Kazansky, the goal of this crystal is to “provide a blueprint to bring humanity back from extinction.” The 5D optical data storage system could also safeguard genomes of endangered plant and animal species, preserving their data for future generations. Created by the university's Optoelectronics Research Centre, the crystal can hold up to 360TB of information. The data stored is virtually indestructible, capable of surviving extreme temperatures and outlasting most other forms of data storage. While the ability to clone or recreate humans artificially is not currently possible, this breakthrough opens the door for future technologies that may one day potentially utilise this preserved data to restore life on Earth. science facts future of humanity science experiment technews2025 technology tech news tech facts
