Video Description: When we visited Lelystad years ago, Dutch people told us: “Be glad you didn’t go to Almere. It’s the worst city in the Netherlands.” So, of course, we had to see for ourselves… is Almere really the worst city in the Netherlands, or does it just have a bad reputation? In this vlog, we take you on a surprising trip to Almere, one of the newest Dutch cities in the province of Flevoland, built entirely on reclaimed land. Almere is sometimes called the Netherlands’ most hated city and is frequently described as “soulless” or “ugly” — but we wanted to see for ourselves what it’s actually like. During our day in Almere, we got to meet a bunch of furry friends at a cozy cat café, met a local who absolutely LOVES his city, explored the city center, had delicious pizza, and climbed to one of the tallest points in Almere for a view of Flevoland. Almere might not have canals like Amsterdam or medieval streets like Utrecht, but what it does have is a good story: bold architecture, reclaimed land, and a reputation that makes people say “don’t go there.” Is Almere really the most hated city in the Netherlands?
